creating sacred spaces in your home

As a double Taurus I am so deeply passionate about the concept of sacred spaces. I wanted to share this now because it just feels so perfect for this time of year. But rest assured, whenever you find yourself reading this, it is always the right time to create or reset your own sacred space(s).

Our homes are more than just physical spaces — they are our sanctuaries for rest, reflection, and connection with ourselves. A safe space for us to recharge our batteries or explore our own inner world. Creating sacred spaces intentionally allows us to really get the most our of our homes. Besides just creating a space that sets the mood or “vibe” we would like, on a subconscious level, it can also really help us tap into whatever the intended energy is, whether we are looking to recharge or connect spiritually, mentally, or emotionally.

In today's fast-paced, hustle-culture focused world, giving ourselves these spaces isn't a luxury, but in my opinion and experience, an essential form of self-care.

Why Sacred Spaces Matter

Sacred spaces give us a sense of retreat from the outside world, offering a place to go inward. Dedicating specific spaces in the home for different rituals, relaxation, and spiritual practices allows for a deeper connection with ourselves. So think - sacred space creation as an act of honoring ourselves and our need for solitude, healing, and introspection. Creating sacred spaces has basically become just an essential part of my practice at this point. I have so many dedicated places in my home for different things. I currently have 3 different altar spaces just in my office, then I have my actual desk. In my bedroom my nightstand has become a true sanctuary that I switch out seasonally, or whenever my intentions change. I also have small mini altars all throughout the main living areas of my home - clustered crystals and colored candles or small trinkets, based around whatever the intended energy is. I also have a full blown glamour/self love situation set up in my bathroom. Obviously - I am the extreme, I have been curating this for myself for a long time. Just one space can truly be so impactful.

Types of Sacred Spaces

The starting point in creating any scared space - what kind of space are you looking to create? What kind of energy are you wanting to cultivate? There are so many types of sacred spaces but let’s go over a few. The most important thing I want you to keep in mind is not to create a scared space just to do so, or because you think you should. What purpose is it meant to serve you? What would be the most supportive or fulfilling for your day to day life and your desired routines? Everyone is going to have different needs here, so take some time to really sit with what would best serve you. There is a way to create a sacred space for whatever yours may be.

A Space to Rest and Recharge

This is your space all about relaxation and comfort.

Now you could absolutely have this be your entire bedroom if you’d like BUT for me personally I tend to focus on one specific space in my bedroom. So let’s talk about ** the power of the nightstand** Guys, I’m such a nerd about this… I’m very passionate about my nightstand, it’s a little embarrassing. And honestly it’s not really about the actual nightstand at all- but what it can hold, and the energy we can set because of that. This is a space where I just let it be fun. I let it be a vibe. I allow myself to have a little bit of everything. And as I mentioned earlier, I swap this space out and refresh the energy seasonally, monthly, whenever it feels like my intentions are changing. It is such a simple way to bring new energy into such a direct space to when we are literally recharging the most - when we sleep.

This is a general list of all the different elements we’ll be talking about incorporating into ANY sacred space but this especially applies here- MY ideal sacred space nightstand setup will always include some variation of the following:

  • Crystals - I typically like to have some sort of combination that supports whatever dream work I may be doing at the time. These are usually a few tumbles, towers and at least one palm stone that I can grab for easily if I happen to want to meditate in bed or do a body scan, etc.

  • At least one plant - mostly for vibes, but if you can get a plant thats helpful with air purification, bonus points for you!

  • Salt Lamp - Similar benefits to a plant, but help with bringing in a more moody lighting element. You can also opt for a high salt content crystal like Selenite or Halite to bring in similar cleansing properties.

  • Candles - Scent is so crucial for me when creating a space. Your nightstand is a beautiful space to have that live. You can also keep a tea light nearby in case you’d like to do any right-before-bed candle gazing. I usually keep a few tea lights and/or chime candles in the drawer of my nightstand for this very reason.

  • A Journal - This is the last, and arguably, most crucial on my list of must-haves for my nightstand. Whether you’re wanting to do some before bed, or right when you wake up gratitude journaling - or you are working on remembering your dreams - having a journal or notebook nearby is always a good idea.

Honorable Mentions: Your favorite book - I am often alternating between a personal development book and some sort of fiction. (I’m currently bouncing between Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus and rereading You are a Badass Everyday by Jen Sincero.) Essential Oils - Whether to pop into a diffuser or a roll on before bed to help tell your brain it is indeed time to rest! Self care items - I have a tigers eye face roller for when I’m doing a sheet mask in bed, hand creams, cuticle oils, a nail file - you get the idea - all stowed away so if the mood strikes I can pamper myself that extra little bit.

Now, it definitely doesn’t have to be your nightstand when it comes to the bedroom, that has just been a big thing for me personally - For you it my be your dresser, or your favorite shelf by a mirror. Whatever it is I just want you to know that even small touches in our bedroom can encourage rest and make sleep a more sacred practice.

My Tip:

While I know I just listed so many things to keep in an arguably small area - Keeping this space clutter free and as intentional as possible will help keep that energy flowing. I always make sure to do a declutter/small tidy every few days and return any one-time use crystals to their home, etc. That way things don’t build up. And as I mentioned earlier, I really encourage you to switch this space up as often as you’d like, whatever feels right for you. Change it with your intentions. Sometimes for me this is monthly, sometimes seasonally. Sometimes I’ll just add one new crystal that harnesses an energy I’d like to add to the mix. There are no rules, this is your space.

A Space for Meditation and Spiritual Practice

If you are someone who dabbles in spirituality in any way - whether it’s some sort of divination, manifestation, or meditation - I cannot stress enough the power in having a dedicated space to do that work. This could be a small altar or a cozy corner with cushions, candles, and items that help with your focus and intention. Let’s use the example of meditation - Not only can having a designated area for meditation strengthen your practice, but it also can help you create a consistent routine.

My Tip:

Choose a spot in whichever room supports this work for you the most - for me its my office, but I have a designated spot in my office specifically for where I do the bulk of my meditation. Create a small altar here where you have a few of your fav go-to crystals for that practice. Similarly to our list we went over for our nightstand - create a setup with crystals, a candle or incense (maybe with a scent you only use when doing your spiritual work. You may like to have your cards or other divination tools here, as well as a journal for any post-meditation notes or prompts or other spiritual writing like scripting. This is a great space to keep any of your other favorite spiritual tools. For me personally, I will always have a mirror in this space, as well as some intentionally picked runes/sigils.

A Space for Journaling

Now, by this point we’ve learned, any sacred space can be a really beautiful spot for us to journal. But if you’d like to create a space spefically for your journaling sessions, you can absolutely do that. You may prefer to journal in specific spaces for specific things. For example - in the morning I really love journaling right at the kitchen table, I can simply light a candle, grab my coffee or tea and I already have crystals set up there. But when I’m doing my manifestation journaling or scripting, I tend to prefer to be in my bed or in my office. Find what works for you! I also have different journals for all of my different journaling uses/intentions.

Journaling is a form of sacred connection to the self, and having a space for it can make it more consistent and powerful. So just try your best to reflect that. Journaling is a great way to allow us to play with romanticizing our life and practice a little bit of magic in the mundane, depending on your vibe.

A Space for Self Care

I’m not going to go into this too, too deeply - but I would really encourage you to create some sort of self love or glamour altar. You can do this at a vanity or in your bathroom, wherever you find yourself getting ready most of the time. This is where alllllll of the self love energy comes into play. My bathroom is separate from the bathroom our guests use - so I have these vibes all throughout my bathroom. Candles, and so, so many crystals. You will want to focus on quartz based (water safe) crystals in this space - Rose Quartz is a must, Clear Quartz, and Strawberry Quartz are my personal favs. From my countertops to my bathtub - There is always a loving, supportive crystal in arms reach. This is also an amazing space to listen to affirmations, or if you’d like, even having some written around the space - think post-it notes on the mirrors type of vibe. You can also do this with sigils!

Creating Sacred Spaces is an act of Self-Care

Creating these sacred spaces for ourselves truly is an act of self-care and self-love.

When we take the time to intentionally curate these spaces it sends a message to ourselves that we are worthy of peace, connection, and rest. Not only that but it is forcing us to pause, and check in with ourselves. What do we want? How do we want to feel? (See the last blog post.) I just want to remind you - creating a sacred space doesn’t have to be expensive or take up a lot of room. You don’t need an entire room; a corner or a single surface can be just as powerful when filled with intention.

So let’s recap -

Here is your simple, step by step breakdown for when you are ready to get started with creating your sacred space:

Step 1: Identify the purpose of your space (rest, meditation, journaling, etc.).

Step 2: Choose a spot that feels peaceful and invites calm/supports that energy.

Step 3: Clear the space — physically and energetically. Declutter the space and do a good cleansing - dust if needed, smoke cleanse or use some Selenite to really reset the energy of the space.

Step 4: Start adding in your intentional items like crystals, candles, or objects that align with the space’s purpose.

Step 5: Set a routine around using the space — even a few minutes daily to connect with it.

Remember! You can switch this up whenever you want - whether it’s the space itself or your routine - you make the rules. This is meant to support you and your desired energy.

So, all of this to say - I hope you feel ready to build or rebuild a sacred space for yourself, especially as we prepare to enter a new season. I admire you for taking this step to put yourself first and honor your energy. I invite you to reflect on where you feel you can carve out space in your own home for yourself, no matter how small. I encourage you to see the creation of these spaces as an ongoing practice of self-care and self-love. I would absolutely love for you to share your thoughts or sacred space ideas in the comments or explore some of the spiritual tools in my shop to help you get started!!
